Gardening with Epsom Salt

Gardening with Epsom Salt

Tomatoes, Peppers, Eggplants and Potatoes – If you want a bountiful crop of these types of plants you can use Epsom Salt to help boot the yield. Most of the time when your yield is low or not coming in like you would expect your plants might be suffering from low Magnesium. They love Magnesium and there usually isn’t enough in the soil to support large yields year over year. This is very true in container growing as well. How do you increase the Magnesium for your plants by adding Epsom salt to your containers or in the garden? You can sprinkle a tablespoon of Epsom salt around the base of your plants and it will start to slowly dissolve and give your plant the needed Magnesium. If you want more immediate results you can mix a tablespoon of Epsom salt into a gallon of water and water the plants. You will probably need to add Epsom salt to your plants every two to three weeks to keep them happy and supplied with the needed Magnesium.

Fruits – Ever notice that your fruit is not quite as sweet as it was right after it was planted? It might be that they need some support. By adding Epsom salt to your plants it can boost the production of chlorophyll, per Natural Living Ideas, which provides more energy to the plants. More energy means more sugar and sweeter plants. I haven’t tried this yet but saw it and it did make sense to me so I’m going to try it this year on our grapes.

Weeds – Most of us hate having weeds in the garden as well as our yards. I don’t like using chemicals on the garden or my lawn. We have greyhounds which can be very sensitive to chemicals and we as the humans prefer to not eat chemicals where possible. Therefore I’m always trying new ways to ensure there are the fewest possible chemicals being used around the house. This is the best all natural weed killer I have ever used. Be aware it will also kill your grass and other plants as well…. So be careful when using this…. Mix two cups of Epsom salt with one gallon of white vinegar and a squirt of liquid dish soap. Put this in a pump up sprayer and go to town on all those weeds.
