I have used many of them in recipes when I have been in a pinch. Just be aware that some of these substitutions will change the flavor of your dish but at least you will be able to move forward without running out to the store and still be on time for the arrival of your guests!<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Allspice<\/strong> \u2013 \u00bd teaspoon ground cinnamon plus \u00bd teaspoon ground cloves (per teaspoon)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Baking Powder<\/strong> \u2013 \u00bc unit baking soda plus \u00bd unit cream of tarter<\/p>\n<p><strong>Baking\u00a0Mix<\/strong> \u2013 1 cup all-purpose flour, 1-1\/2 teaspoons baking powder, \u00bd teaspoon salt, and 1 tablespoon vegetable shorting<\/p>\n<p><strong>Brown Sugar<\/strong> \u2013 1 cup granulated sugar plus 2 tablespoons molasses or dark corn syrup<\/p>\n<p><strong>Buttermilk<\/strong> \u2013 1 tablespoon lemon juice or white vinegar plus one cup of milk. Let stand a few minutes before adding to receipe<\/p>\n<p><strong>Condensed Milk<\/strong> \u2013 1-1\/4 cup sugar dissolved in 1 cup evaporated milk (per cup)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Corn Syrup<\/strong> \u2013 Equal amount of honey<\/p>\n<p><strong>Cornstarch<\/strong> \u2013 Double amount of all purpose flour or 4 teaspoons quick cooking tapioca<\/p>\n<p><strong>Cream<\/strong> \u2013 Heavy \u2013 <em>Not for whipping<\/em> \u2013 \u00be cup milk plus 1\/3 cup butter (per cup)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Evaporated Milk<\/strong> \u2013 1-2\/3 cup milk simmered slowly until reduced to 1 cup<\/p>\n<p><strong>Herbs Fresh<\/strong> \u2013 \u00be to 1 teaspoon dried per tablespoon fresh<\/p>\n<p><strong>Herbs Dry<\/strong> \u2013 1 to 1-1\/4 tablespoon fresh per teaspoon of dry<\/p>\n<p><strong>Honey<\/strong> \u2013 1-1\/4 unit of sugar plus \u00bc unit apple juice or water<\/p>\n<p><strong>Lemon Juice<\/strong> \u2013 Equal amount of white vinegar<\/p>\n<p><strong>Maple Syrup<\/strong> \u2013 1 cup sugar dissolved in 1 cup water, plus 1 teaspoon vanilla extract<\/p>\n<p><strong>Molasses<\/strong> \u2013 Equal amount honey or dark corn syrup<\/p>\n<p><strong>Oil<\/strong> \u2013 <em>For baking<\/em> &#8211; Equal amount of unsweetened applesauce<\/p>\n<p><strong>Poultry Seasoning<\/strong> \u2013 \u00bc teaspoon Thyme plus \u00be teaspoon sage<\/p>\n<p><strong>Pumpkin Pie Spice<\/strong> \u2013 \u00bd teaspoon cinnamon, \u00bc teaspoon ginger, 1\/8 teaspoon allspice and 1\/8 teaspoon nutmeg<\/p>\n<p><strong>Sour Cream<\/strong> \u2013 Equal amount of cottage cheese, blended smooth<\/p>\n<p><strong>Tomato Juice<\/strong> \u2013 Equal amounts of tomato sauce and water blended to make the amount needed for recipe<\/p>\n<p><strong>Tomato Paste<\/strong> \u2013 Tomato sauce doubled for what recipe calls for and simmered until reduced by half<\/p>\n<p><strong>Vanilla Bean<\/strong> \u2013 1-2 teaspoons of vanilla extract per bean &#8211; <em>Watch the rest of the liquids in your recipe because this is adding to the liquid<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Substitutions Nothing worse than having a group of people on their way for a nice party and running out of a critical element of a recipe so here is a list of substitutions I have compiled over the years.
